ABSTRACT
Information on the history of Russia is presented. Under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev the Berlin Wall in Berlin, Germany was broken down in 1989. The empire of the United States of Soviet Russia (USSR) collapsed in 1991. Russia became a member of the Council of Europe to retain the vestiges of superpower status and to earn acceptance as a civilized democracy.
