ABSTRACT
This article provides information on cities and communities in Afghanistan. Located at the crossroads of major trade routes in east-central Afghanistan, Kabul is Afghanistan's largest city, capital, and economic and cultural center. It sits on both sides of the Kabul River high in a mountain valley near the strategic Khyber Pass. At an elevation of 5,876 feet, it is one of the highest capital cities in the world. Long a center of trade, Kabul expanded into an industrial center beginning in the nineteen forties. In the nineteen seventies Kabul University established partnerships with academic institutions from around the world to increase its programs and faculty.
