The author reflects on his role as visual art teacher to youth in a correctional setting. He states that the focus on literacy and numeracy is not appropriate to youth in conflict with the law and this is what gives him the opportunity to right a scholastic wrong. He explains that drawing seems to be a better way of dealing with anxiety for someone who has had a day or two in court than trying to decipher text. He discusses the advantages he finds in teaching in a correctional setting.
