ABSTRACT
An essay is presented on U.S. fears concerning the health and environmental effects of Japanese immigration and the introduction of the Japanese beetle to the U.S. during the 1920s and 1930s. According to the author, these fears influenced anti-Asian and anti-immigration government policies during this period. It is suggested that the figurative conflation of immigrants and insects as invaders dehumanized Japanese Americans.
