ABSTRACT
An essay is presented which examines themes explored in 20th century Chinese national histories including definitions of China, evaluation of the Confucian tradition, and historical periodization. Works by several historians including Liu Yizheng, Qian Mu, and Fan Wenlan are discussed. Similarities to Western histories are also explored and include the support of military expansion, absence of ethnic minorities, and exclusion of women.
