ABSTRACT
The article presents the author's views on the role of primary care in health care systems in the U.S. The primary care concept can be applied to all groups. A workshop of the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences in January 1995 in Washington D.C. has explored the scientific base of primary care. Differences between primary care and specialty care was identified.
