ABSTRACT
The article introduces various topics discussed in the June 1984 issue of the journal 'Management Services.' An obituary in June 1984's issue on Sidney James Noel-Brown, NB to his friends, serves to remind that the Institute is a 'people' organisation. His name is probably remembered by very few but his contribution in the formative years of the Institute of Management Services was enormous. There are still people today who make a tremendous contribution to the work of the Institute although their names may be little known. Like all voluntary organisations the number is small but success without them would be impossible. The essential quality of a professional association is a willingness for those in the profession to come together for the regulation of their affairs and for the development of their discipline. This is part of a long Great Britain's tradition of voluntary, rather than state, direction. It has served well and still has a major part to play in Great Britain's industrial and commercial life. The Institute, with its formal constitution, is but a mechanism through which things may be done.
