ABSTRACT
The author reflects on the environmental disadvantages of the U.S. government's plan to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. She argues that the drilling could result in an oil spill that will damage the arctic ecosystem. She cites that the drilling will also affect fragile species of birds, mammals and fish. She believes that the oil that will be extracted from the area would only amount to minimal gas supply and will not reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil.
