ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the November 2005 agreement on the opening of Gaza's border crossings which will enable goods and people to move between Gaza, Israel and Egypt. This is a vital step and makes the Israeli disengagement far more credible. The re-opening of the border crossings would allow Gazans to take advantage of the new harvests grown in former settlement greenhouses in Southern Gaza, where some 20,000 tonnes of agricultural exports have been produced since Israel settlers were evacuated. Longer term, better prospects for exports and jobs will boost growth and will also have positive political spillovers. Still, there is an ongoing risk of future closures on security grounds.
