ABSTRACT
The article reports on how IT staffers at law firm Perkins Coie LLP overhauled their storage infrastructure to keep lawyers productive. Perkins Coie is the largest law firm in the Northwest and Microsoft Corp., Adobe Systems Inc. and Boeing Co. are among its clientele. Jim Ryan, Perkins Coie's systems infrastructure manager, wanted not only to deal with the growth in firm's data but also to minimize downtime. He decided to implement a SAN solution built on EMC Corp.'s Clariion CX arrays and SAFE to boost scalability and availability. With approximately 2,000 mailboxes to manage, Ryan's e-mail infrastructure is fairly large. However, the enormous size of the mailboxes was even more daunting factor than the number of mailboxes. This is due to the fact that mountains of data shuffle among members of legal teams during long court cases. Up until a few years ago, this degree of long-term message retention would have been unusual for the vast majority of companies. About a year ago, things got so bad at Perkins Coie that Microsoft threatened to cut off Exchange support if the law firm couldn't get its e-mail storage in order.
