Turning Techno-Savvy into Info-Savvy: Authentically Integrating Information Literacy into the College Curriculum

Case Study
This case study reports a series of hands-on/minds-on information literacy activities that dissolve student's misconception that techno-savvy is synonymous with information literate. The students studied in this investigation were graduate and undergraduate fellows in the University of Oklahoma's Authentic Teaching Alliance (ATA), which is funded by the National Science Foundation. Previous experience in providing information literacy instruction to the ATA fellows in Spring 2002 provided an insight into their information seeking behaviors. The information gathered in the interviews illustrates the ATA fellows to be a technologically savvy population that regularly uses e-mail and the World Wide Web to support academic, work, and personal activities. In conclusion, to achieve interest in and commitment to information literacy, information literacy instruction must be relevant to students' lives and must mesh with their learning styles. This is facilitated by a personal interest in the students as well as intimate involvement of the teaching faculty.
