A biogas fired industrial burner suitable for domestic application has been designed, fabricated and compared with a similar LPG burner designed and fabricated elsewhere to deliver the same thermal output of 22.6kw. This study reviewed and relied on preliminary investigations of the local garri frying process using wood fuel in the rural areas of Nigeria (Ofudu and Kinigoma 2007). Biogas generated from organic kitchen waste was used for this study. This project encourages wining biogas from organic kitchen waste which hopefully can address the long term uncertainties associated with the conventional fossil fuels in terms of availability and cost. The burner parameters such as the size of the nozzle, the size of the burner slot for air entrainment, the size of the burner pipe and the number of 3mm orifices needed on the burner for flame stability were determined to be 2.6mm, 87.74mm, 27.86mm and 214 respectively. The fabricated burner was tested to determine the effect of burner parameters on the flame quality. The engineering drawing of the biogas burner showing the arrangement and size of the burner make-up was also given. This source of energy if fully embraced by the rural populace will bring about effective waste management. It is believed that environmental sanitation campaigns would be more successful if benefits derived from biodegradable kitchen waste are explained in economic terms.
