The article traces the external application strategy of Facebook from 2007 to 2013 as part of its efforts to engage users and increase advertising. In 2007, games like Farmville, Pet Society and Are You Interested? were addictive and communicative and also attracted millions of new users to Facebook. In 2008, Vernal helped launch the Facebook Connect, a log-in button that signs users in to applications using Facebook accounts. In April 2013, the social network purchased Parse, a coding toolkit that makes it easy to develop versions of the same application for Android, iPhone operating system (iOS) and other operating systems.
