ABSTRACT
The author describes the political situation in Palestine since the death of the country's leader Yasser Arafat. Arafat's right-hand man for decades, he notes, is Mahmoud Abbas, who had served as prime minister since 2003 and won the presidential elections. He further notes when Abbas took the oath of office as the new president of the Palestinian authority on January 15, 2005, he was charged by the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia, to implement the Road Map peace plan.
