Calcium intake and adiposity in 9 to 12-year-old children

Objective: Recent studies in adults have shown an association between calcium intake and adiposity; however, few studies have evaluated this association in children despite the pediatric obesity epidemic. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the association between calcium intake and adiposity in 9 to 12-yr-old children. Methods: One-hundred-twenty children (47 boys, 73 girls) from a rural Midwestern community completed the Youth/Adolescent Food Frequency Questionnaire and were assessed for stature, body mass, and skinfold thickness. The association between calcium intake and adiposity was examined by partial correlation and ANCOVA, controlling for age, sex, body mass index, and physical activity. Results: Approximately 63% of the participants did not meet the recommended daily intake (RDI) for calcium intake and approximately 40% of total sample were classified as overweight or obese. Although not statistically significant, the correlations between calcium intake and adiposity were in the expected direction (r= -0.19 in boys, r= -0.17 in girls, and r= -0.17 in the total sample), as was the difference in percent body fat between those who did not meet the RDI for calcium intake those who met the RDI (n=44) (27.2% vs 25.2%, P= 0.09). Conclusions: The findings indicate that a majority of youth in this sample did not meet the RDI for calcium and were overweight or obese. It appears that dietary calcium intake may account for a small portion (3%) of the total variance in adiposity among children.
