In her November 11 article in your Health pages, Alice Smellie said she cut out 100g of added sugars a day and this was her total intake of sugars. Total sugars consists of both sugars that are naturally present in foods and those added to a product. So, her added sugar intake may have been zero but she consumed about 45g of sugars each day, through items such as bananas or apples. Sugars are present in a wide range of different foods. They can help enable people to follow a varied, nutritionally balanced and enjoyable diet.
