ABSTRACT
We present the etiology of recurrent infections and the effects of long term administration of azithromycin in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Results. In 25 patients with COPD we studied the bacterial etiology of recurrent exacerbations and the effects of long term administration of azithromycin 500mg every other day for 6 months with a reevaluation after a pause of 3 months. The scores of the St George Questionnaire of the quality of life of respiratory patients where significantly improved (the Symptoms Domain improved from 71,62 ± 34,45 to 60,15 ± 27,58 units and the Total Domain from 65,95 ± 27,69 to 57,53 ± 18,18 units, p < 0,01). 60% of the patients had pathogenic flora in the sputum and/or bronchial aspirate: 32% had Pseudomonas aeruginosa, H. influenzae 8%. Acinetobacter, E. Coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae 4% each and Streptococcus pneumoniae 8%. The number of acute exacerbations with hospital admissions was reduced from 3±2 in 12 months to 1 in 9 months. The number of hospital days was reduced from 36±20 days per year to 3±12 for 9 months.
