ABSTRACT
The article presents a profile and discusses the work of the Turkish-born video and installation artist Esra Ersen. Particular focus is paid to several of her documentary videos including the 2011 "Casting for a Canary Opera" and the 2003 "Brothers and Sisters." The author also discusses Ersen's exploration of various themes in her works including immigration, assimilation and what it means to be Turkish in a European context. Brief biographical information about the artist, who resides in Berlin, Germany, is provided.
