ABSTRACT
The article looks at the walls built by the Roman Empire along its borders. It notes sections of wall that remain as of the 21st century, citing Hadrian's Wall in England and recounting the role of the Emperor Hadrian in overseeing the construction of boundary walls. It discusses why the empire chose to build boundary walls and says scholars are questioning the traditional explanation that they were designed for military defense.
