ABSTRACT
The article discusses efforts by the St. Louis region of Illinois to meet air quality standards, deemed below national standards by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since the 1990s. It notes that Madison County and 12 other Illinois counties fail the standard for lead, particulate matter 2.5 and eight-hour ozone levels. The county reportedly hosts eight of the 10 leading perpetrators of particle pollution in the Metro East including U.S. Steel, American Colloid Co. and Alton Steel Inc.
