The article focuses on the growth and popularity of organization development (OD) as a profession in Poland in the 1980s. Europe is enriching OD concepts by drawing from national experiences. This changes the OD concept to some extent, and it is difficult to assess if these additions make OD in Europe more successful in the U.S. The lack of comparative research in the OD field, as well as unclear methods of evaluating OD efforts, contribute to such uncertainty. This increasing interest in OD did not bypass Poland. OD was implemented in Poland under different names such as human resources development, social system diagnosis or humanizing practices. The work of OD pioneers in Poland under stressful conditions was very fragmented and not visible publicly, but the first stage of OD growth saw some OD interventions within enterprises. For example, applying Management by Objectives in the Ursus Tractor Factory increased professional OD skills as well as heightened the interests of managers in planned change. However, the integration of OD consultants in Poland is delayed by the lack of cooperation between the Organization Development Institute and the International OD Association. The energy which should be directed toward cooperation is partly wasted on misunderstanding. This influences Polish perceptions, where the OD movement is still cautiously analyzed by those in the organization sciences.
