ABSTRACT
Saskatchewan-born Gladys Arnold became a national celebrity briefly during the Second World War. Based in Ottawa, she worked tirelessly for General de Gaulle's Free France movement and subsequently for the post-war French embassy. This study focuses primarily on her years in France where. in the 1930s, she worked as a journalist for the Canadian Press. She left Canada a committed pacifist, but within 3 years had decided that the risks of fighting Hitler were less than the risks of appeasing him. The paper explores the nature of her early pacifism, then advances a series of explanations for her change of heart.
