ABSTRACT
The article discusses Japan's nuclear industry and the multiple problems associated with radioactivity. It notes how the Japanese are hypersensitive about nuclear issues brought about by their Hiroshima and Nagasaki experience where many of them are still suffering from diseases caused by the blast. Many A-bomb survivors and anti-nuclear weapon activists have however been indifferent to the nuclear energy issue and anti-nuclear energy campaigners have been marginalized. Japan's anxiety on its lack of natural energy resources and its promotion of nuclear science led the Japanese government to embrace nuclear energy. It is hoped that Japan's nuclear disaster will provide the wake-up call for Japan to emphasize green energy development and end its reliance on nuclear power.
