ABSTRACT
The article discusses issues regarding the radioactive water leakage from the turbine building of Unit 1 of the Fukushima Daiichi Reactor in Fukushima, Japan. It focuses on the presence of chlorine-38, a short-lived radionuclide, in the water. Concerns are raised regarding periodic criticalities which could create radioactive fission and activation products. It analyzes whether chlorine-38 was formed due to spontaneous fission or through unintended chain reactions. Suggestions for Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) to reduce inadvertent criticalities include the installation of a neutron detector to monitor the Fukushima reactor core, the mixing of neutron absorbers with cooling water, and the submission of the complete gamma spectra instead of summaries of the results.
