The article examines the relationship between U.S. President Barack Obama and Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas concerning the potential for Palestine to secure an international declaration of statehood at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session in 2011. Abbas and the Palestinian Authority refused to engage in a peace initiative supported by the Obama administration that would involve negotiations with Israel. It is alleged that Abbas does not want to engage in negotiations that may involve concessions that would impact the Palestinian people. Obama alluded to the formation of an independent Palestinian state during the opening session of the UN General Assembly on September 22,2010.
