ABSTRACT
An essay is presented which examines the role that kofforts, or trunks, used by Icelandic immigrants during their migration process to Canada serve in preserving their cultural heritage. It discusses ways in which Icelanders migrating to Manitoba adopted Anglican names and customs in an effort to succeed economically, explores how the kofforts were used as cultural images of Canadian ethnic identity, and examines the themes of maternal trauma often associated with the trunks.
