Performance is the central construct in industrial and organizational psychology, yet our conceptual understanding of individual performance as indicated by current performance models is quite limited. Many of these models of individual performance (a) force us to define performance as either behavior or outcomes, (b) recognize, but assume away, the influence of environmental factors on performance, and (c) fail to describe the mechanism by which performance antecedents actually influence performance. A performance model is proposed that decomposes behavior into its strategy, effort and skillfulness components. These, when combined with environmental factors, are assumed to be necessary and sufficient to account for variation in performance outcomes. Revised strategies for researching individual performance are discussed.
