ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the combined cases of New York trashmonger Samuel Roth and salesman David Alberts of Los Angeles, California related to sex and obscenity. It says that the main issue in Roth's case was whether the U.S. law abridged the First Amendment, while in Alberts' was whether the California statute defied the 14th Amendment. It states that Roth and Alberts were both convicted and four U.S. Supreme Court Justices supported Justice William J. Brennan in affirming the convictions.
