ABSTRACT
The article presents the findings of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) survey which examined the mathematical skills of students in the U.S. The survey, which was released in September 1979, found that students' mathematical competence has declined from 1974-1979. It discovered that the mathematical skills of students in economically depressed areas have improved significantly.
