Diet and cancer today: an update

Diet is considered one of the most important factors affecting cancer risk. Several studies have addressed this issue but, since the published research is by no means uniform in its assessment, many of its aspects are controversial. In the present short review the most updated data available in the international literature on diet and cancer are briefly discussed. A diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruit seems the best way for humans to reduce their risk of the most common forms of cancer. The so-called Mediterranean diet can help reduce the mortality from cardiovascular disease and cancer. There is no solid evidence so far to show that dietary supplements such as vitamins significantly reduce the risk of cancer, with the exception of vitamin D and calcium. On the contrary, an increase in the risk has been observed in selected populations for some types of cancer. Antioxidants, whose effect on cell signaling is becoming more evident, are still under investigation but so far they have not been shown to reduce the risk of cancer.
