ABSTRACT
The article reports on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty-Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act. The legislation, which was passed by the U.S. Congress in 1975, was established to reform product warranty practices in order to promote consumer protection. It is suggested that many consumers favor products accompanied by warranties because they believe the warranty implies heightened product quality. The author asserts that warranties do not provide an element of protection beyond the protection guaranteed by the Uniform Commercial Code. It is further suggested that warranties featuring obscure terminology often function solely as sales promotions instead of instruments of consumer recourse.
