ABSTRACT
The great arid centre of Australia is ringed by a multitude of habitats, from deserts to rainforests, mangroves to mountains, grasslands to an endless coastline. The distinctive Australian landscape, ancient and long-isolated from the other land masses of the world, has had such a profound influence on its flora and fauna that many are found nowhere else on Earth. Of the almost 700,000 different plant and animal species that live in Australia, more than 85 per cent are endemic. Despite this, Australia today claims one of the highest levels of endangered and extinct species in the world.
