ABSTRACT
The article reports on the ammendment of the Medicare recoupment rule in the U.S. by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. According to a rule issued in the Federal Register on September 16, 2009, the government can no longer recoup medicare refunds from healthcare providers on the first stage of appeal when an overpayment is seen. It notes that to recoup overpayments, the medicare program will reduce the medicare payments to providers and applies the amount withheld against the debt.
