ABSTRACT
The article offers information about the hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) and serious reportable events (SREs) for quality reporting and reimbursement in the U.S. It states that HACs are diagnoses determined by Medicare to be reasonably preventable, while SREs can occur as a result of injury or error from care management. Moreover, payment for acute care inpatient cases is reduced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) when designated HACs are not present on admission (POA).
