ABSTRACT
The article reports on a survey carried out by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland which indicated that initiatives to collect and destroy handguns and other small arms in countries with high rates of homicides such as Brazil and South Africa have helped bring down the homicide number. It revealed that about 490,000 homicides are committed each year worldwide. The survey also note that small arms are used in about 60% of homicides.
