This section offers news briefs related to science. According to a study by Balaji Rajagopalan of the University of Colorado in Boulder, there is a 50% chance that the giant reservoirs on the Colorado river will be empty by mid-century. The American Meteorological Society has endorsed research into manipulating the climate of the Earth in order to stop global warming. It has been found that a strain of the simian version of HIV, which causes symptoms of AIDS in wild Tanzanian chimpanzees, could improve research into drugs and vaccines for people.

Infection of mesangial cells with HIV and SIV: Identification of GPR1 as a coreceptor. Background. Mesangial cells are an important component of the glomerulus. The pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus transmission via the rectal route remains poorly understood. By use of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)—rhesus macaque model and intrarectal inoculation with pathogenic SIVmac251, a significant increase was found in the percentage of...

Discusses research showing recombinant envelope proteins from macrophage-tropic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) induce a signal through CCR5 on CD4+ T cells, and that envelope-mediated signal transduction through CCR5 induces chemotaxis of T cells. The simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Nef proteins induce the endocytosis of CD4 and class I MHC molecules. Here we show that SIV Nef interacts with the AP-2 adaptor complex via two elements located in the N-terminal region of the Nef molecule,...
