An overview of bank bailouts is presented. The bailout of banks by the U.S. government during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis is described. Vocabulary such as "Bailout program," "Subprime mortgage," and "Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP)," are defined. Particular focus is given to the effects of the deregulation of banks, financial institutions, and savings and loans in the U.S. The U.S. Emergency Economic Stabilization Act and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are also discussed.
