ABSTRACT
Storage of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in landfills contributes to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) effect. The evaluation of the areal emission rate of gaseous pollutants from landfills is a very difficult to be control, owing to the high number of factors affecting the emission process. Meteorological factors in some cases led to enhancement of lateral migration of LFG that cause gas explosion accident. A comprehensive analysis describing the LFG generation process, methods of measurement and calculation of LFG emission rate, and the factors affecting the emission rate of LFG presented in this paper. These factors includes the gas production rate, the gas migration properties through the waste layers and through the top layer of the landfill, the gas collection efficiency, the oxidation activity in the landfill cover, and the factors affecting the transfer of the gas to the atmosphere, in which related to meteorological factors. The review suggests that development of predictable models for quantification of surface LFG emission rate should be taken on to their account those factors and their effects on LFG emission rate.
