ABSTRACT
This paper analyzes the Kosovo crisis from a sociological, historical and metatheoretical perspective. I argue that Western metaphysics, primarily the binary of the particular and the universal, forms the metatheoretical basis of contemporary cosmopolitical discourse and policy. An important manifestation of this tendency is the mishandling of the independence movement in Kosovo as an 'ethnic conflict,' in doing so, global cosmopolitical institutions such as the United Nations reify and reproduce ethnicity as a juridical and utilitarian 'solution.' I argue that it might be more productive to reorient the political to a universal that integrates particularity in a dialectical sense rather than as an oppositional category. Ethnicity, instead of composing the basis of political representation, should be considered an autonomous cultural phenomenon but not form the basis of political representation or civic organization.
