ABSTRACT
The article reveals that most ship owners and their underwriters are resisting arming their ships and crews to combat a wave of piracy off the coast of Africa. Somali pirates had attacked 108 ships in the Gulf of Aden in 2008 and hijacked 42 of them, according to the London-based International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Center. The most basic risk management tactic that shippers can use is avoiding piracy hot spots. A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S and Odfjell SE have chosen this option.
