ABSTRACT
The article deals with the proof provided by the U.S. Library of Congress for the authentication of "Cupid Complaining to Venus," a 16th century painting by Lucas Cranach in the collection of the National Gallery of Great Britain. A photograph of the Cranach oil-on-wood painting contained in an album called "The Private Gallery of Adolf Hitler," was supplied by the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library, to prove that the painting was once part of Adolf Hitler's private collection. The museum is now investigating the exact provenance of the 1525 painting. It offers an overview of the Library's Third Reich Collection.
