This article presents the results of a research into the variables accounting for the internationalisation of companies. It is the result of a study conducted in companies belonging to the French distribution sector. The authors first present a summary of various theories about and approaches to internationalisation; they then analyse the development in the distribution sector before giving the results of the inquiry based on a questionnaire leading to defining the motives of the internationalisation of companies in this sector
