ABSTRACT
The article discusses various technological innovations in the science of prosthetics in the U.S. since the 1980s. Innovative designs to improve mobility and comfort, electronic and microchip technologies and new flexible and lightweight fabrication materials have produced breakthroughs in prosthetics and have improved the lives of amputees and other disabled persons. The most notable improvements have been shown by the socket, the part of the prosthesis to which the residual limb of the user is fitted into. The use of flexible and thin plastics has allowed sockets to be more dynamic and to contract and expand with the residual limb's muscles.
