ABSTRACT
The article focuses on a study which found that generic prescriptions account for a large part of the pharmaceutical market in the U.S. According to the study, 65 percent of all U.S. prescriptions dispensed are filled with generics. It also noted that as a number of big-name drugs are set to lose patent protection in 2008, the number of generics being prescribed is expected to grow. Cathy Polley, vice president of pharmacy services at FMI, pointed that substituting a brand name drug with a generic can save patients' money.
