ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to present advantages of elastic stable intramedullary nailing ESIN in treatment of children with forearm shaft fractures, based on our experience. Material and methods: Between January 2001 and December 2003, 32 children with forearm shaft fractures were treated with ESIN in Upper Silesia Center of Child and Mother's Health in Katowice. All medical records and X-ray films were reviewed. Results: The age of children ranged from 5 to 17 years, with mean age of 11 years. There were 27 children with fractures of both forearm bones. Closed fractures were seen in 87%, open fractures in 13% of injuries. The fractures were reduced by closed methods in 15 children (46.8%). In 17 children the fracture was irreducible and it was necessary to perform an open reduction. Only in half of children with fracture of both forearm bones - 13 children, we performed ESIN of the radius and the ulna. In the remaining 14 children with fracture of both forearm bones we did ESIN of the radius only - after reduction of the fracture we evaluated the ulna as stable. Clinical results of treatment with ESIN in all children are excellent. Conclusion: We consider that minimally invasive technique of ESIN should be used in children widely.
