In 2008, getting support in monetary form will be a legal claim for persons with disability. After an overview over direct payments (also called personal budgets) to disabled persons in several countries, the results of a pilot project on direct payments to persons with mental or psychic disability are reported. Discussion focuses on the appropriate framework needed for handling successfully the task of managing the budget and on the impact of the introduction of direct payments on social professions.
