ABSTRACT
The article explores the different formulation of national literature in Cuba proposed by Cuban writer Virgilio Piñera. Details of how Piñera questioned the existence of a national literature in Cuba in his lecture at the Havana Lyceum on February 27, 1955. An overview of his intellectual feud with the members of "Orígenes" journal is provided. It relates the literary production in Cuba during the 1930s and 1940s which serves as evidence against Piñera's assertion denying the existence of Cuban literature.
