ABSTRACT
The author describes attempts to bring about meaningful interaction between Israeli and Palestinian Arab students in Israel. He describes the Hand in Hand Center for Jewish-Arab Education, founded in 1997 in Israel with the intent of building peace between Jews and Arabs through bilingual and multicultural elementary schools. He describes his visit, sponsored by the America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL), to the Gesher al Hawadi School, the first Hand in Hand school to be built in an Arab town. He notes that the school teaches three religions, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, and two languages, Hebrew and Arabic, in addition to a core curriculum including mathematics, history, and science. He describes teachers' teamwork, school-community activities, and students' civics education.
