ABSTRACT
The author discusses the use of alternative fuels such as ethanol, as the U.S. is seeking environment friendly solutions of energy sources to reduce dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 by President George W. Bush's "Twenty in Ten" plan attempts to lessen gasoline consumption by 20% in 2017. An evaluation is offered for the ethanol and gasoline fuel's capacity in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, its energy balance, and its potential effect. It has been stated that corn ethanol will provide a reduction in emissions. It is further suggested that policymakers should encourage cellulosic production, while looking toward flexible policies that will not hinder potential innovations in the future.
