ABSTRACT
The article presents information related to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Division of Habitat and Resource Conservation (HRC). The HRC program prevents the decline of species so that they will not need Endangered Species Act protection. Nebraska's Platte River is one of the recent environmental successes of the program. The river provided a comucopia of habitats for different species including whooping crane, least tern, piping plover and pallid sturgeon. These creatures occurred in the river until people began altering the landscape.
